Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA)

Blue Phoenix specialises in the treatment of residues from waste incineration plants. At our four German locations, we offer our partners comprehensive disposal as well as responsible and sustainable waste management.

The incineration of municipal and commercial waste generally leaves between 20 to 30 % predominantly mineral residues, which are referred to as incinerator bottom ash (IBA).

The IBA consist of a mixture that contains between 5 - 10 % iron (ferrous metals) and approximately 2 - 4 % non-ferrous metals (NF metals), depending on the input of the incineration plants. The IBA also contains a small amount of unburned waste (approximately 1 - 3%), which can interfere with the subsequent recycling process. The main components of IBA are the inert components, which consist of sand, glass, ceramics and porcelain.

The IBA is treated in specialized processing plants in order to recover the valuable ferrous and non-ferrous metals on the one hand and to condition the remaining mineral residues so that they can be used as substitute building materials on the other.
